Black Moms Support Group of Families of Color-Seattle

I had the honor of serving as a Parent Educator and Group Facilitator for the Black Moms Support Group of Families of Color Seattle! For six weeks, we met with every Saturday from 11am-1pm to share space, vent, and share resources.  We discussed everything under the sun, from parenting as Black women in America, self-care, nutrition, careers, relationships, and current events- all with our precious babies in tow! Our group was beautifully diverse; we ranged from doulas, teachers, doctors, stay-at-home moms and from Detroit, Guyana, New York, and more!

Sharing space (and cupcakes and mimosas) with these dynamic women has inspired me to continue to make space for Black mothers and children. I am looking for toward facilitating the Queer Parents of Color Group starting in April!

Take Root 2018 was a huge success!

Our session, "Unpacking the Maternal Health Crisis: Black Women's Reproductive Justice NOW!", featured myself, Dr. Joia Crear-Perry, Elizabeth Dawes Gay, and Kimberly Seals Allers.  We covered black infant and maternal health, breastfeeding barriers, and solutions to improving birth outcomes for black infants and mothers.

It was such a great honor to work with the amazing women on this panel, soak up their knowledge, and share my knowledge as a black mother, doula, educator, and activist! I also had an amazing time exploring Norman and Oklahoma City! I also managed to squeeze in quite a bit of retail therapy at the local Wal-Mart!
